***WHAT WE BELIEVE IS TRUE ***
Icebreaker “What we believe is true”
No matter
what they tell us
No matter
what they do
No matter
what they teach us
What we
believe is true.
What we
believe is true (echo)
I grew up
in a typical traditional Vietnamese family. Life after the war are very hard for
my parents therefore they always want the best for me. Although my family is
not rich but I am always the prince in their eyes. Growing up, I was not allowed
to do any housework. My only job was to study hard. I become a very shy, lazy
person and lack of confident. Every time my parents took me to a party, I only
sit there and…breath.
After
graduated high school, my mom asked me to go oversea to study. However, at the
time I believe whoever go oversea to study must be very bad at school in
Vietnam that’s why they run away and choose something else easier. I’m brave so
I don’t want to run away from a challenge.
But after
one year in University in Vietnam, I got struck by one sentence from my main
university lecturer. He said quote “if you guys manage to graduated from this
major, I guarantee to you, you will always have a job and your salary is be
$200 AUD per month ~ 3million VND”. I was shocked by that amount and thinking
that I am going to spend another 4 years study hard to exchange for 3million
VND per month? No way. I don’t see any future to stay and study in this
university. I ran back home and asked my mom to go oversea to study. Luckily,
she said yes.
I came to Australia
a few months after that with no English, no family, no relatives, a few clothes
and some instant noodles. I still remembered the first time arrived to Brisbane
international airport. The fresh air and warm weather make me feel like home.
One of the things that contribute to my success today is a quote from a friend
who live in the US. I asked her “can you please give me some advice when I go
to Australia?” She said “Remember don’t act like you know everything”. That
quote helps me a lot. Living my entire life in Vietnam make me think that
everything happen around me is fact but when I live in Australia, all the facts
that I learned from Vietnam are totally not fact anymore.
For
example, looking to older people eyes when talking is an act of disrespect
whereas it is completely opposite in Australia. Another example, when you go
for an interview, you need to stay humble whereas here we need to express
ourselves, sell ourselves to show the employer how good we are.
I realize
whatever I learned in Vietnam may not be relevant in Australia. To change my
subconscious mind is the hardest part of my journey. Changing your subconscious
mind is very much feel like you switching from using Microsoft to Macbook.
It was okay
for people to pee on the street, but it’s not okay here
It was okay
for people to ask for age and salary, but it’s not okay here
It was okay
for people to make noise when eating, it’s not okay here.
No matter
what they teach us
What we
believe is true.
I was believing
myself is a weak little kid who is very skinny. I can’t gain weight and I have
to go to the doctor every month to get medicine in Vietnam. But when I arrived
in Brisbane, the first 3 years. I don’t even take a single tablet, not even a
paradol. I gain 8 kgs in 3 years and I feel so much energy. That is when I said
to myself that “I am going to get Australia citizenship” not for me but to
sponsor my parents to come here and live the life without sickness. And as of
today, I have fulfilled my wishes. What we believe is true.
Few years
ago, I was believed that a person who can sing won’t able to do public speaking
and a person who can do public speaking won’t able to sing. But now I am going
to change that perspective, I’m going to change that believe and I’m now
believe that I can be a great pubic speaker not even in English but also in
Vietnamese. What we believe is true.
If you hang
around 5 public speaker, you will be the 6th.
